Wynonna Earp Boss hopes the Syfy “All the Things” finale made you feel – and a happy wedding accident as well
The following includes spoilers from the Syfy finale by Wynonna Earp.
After four years of protecting purgatory with her peacemaker, Wynonna Earp literally got into it Drive into the sunset. And she did this while on a motorcycle with Doc Holliday sitting behind her.
Mind you, the two almost never ended up together. After the simply beautiful “WayHaught” wedding, Doc (played by Tim Rozon) was determined to put purgatory in Charlie’s rearview mirror and live as “just a man” and Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) felt compelled to stay as such Purgatory protector. But with a powerful nudge from Sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), Wynonna caught up with her husband and confessed her love, at which point they decided to travel lightly for the first time in a long time and pay their daughter Alice a visit to MIracles, Montana .
TVLine spoke to the series creator Emily Andras about the design of this very beautiful finale, at least one “happy accident” that evoked a lot of emotions and more.
TVLINE | The finale has just been broadcast…. What emotions do you hope the fans feel at this moment?
Just from head to toe body heat and love and affection and sadness…. And a little bit bittersweet. I feel that joy needs to be paired with nostalgia, so I hope they feel all of the things. But hopefully not hungover!
TVLINE | When over the years have you ever imagined Wynonna and Doc driving off into the sunset?
Uhh! I almost never let myself imagine it, you know? It’s so fun – when you start doing a show you have all sorts of ideas about which pairings will come to the top, who will end up with whom, and one of Earp’s joys is that so many different things have happened . But these two characters certainly deserve a chance to be happy, whatever that means to them. I never thought that I could end such a romantic pairing with the woman who drives the motorcycle and the man on my back.
TVLINE | I watch this last sequence and it almost feels strange when I see the two set off into the “real world”. But I also found it viscerally exciting to see so much in front of them.
This is so nice, thanks for saying that. I feel like I have the world in front of me and I am such an unusual couple that I would love to see what happens next for them. I’m sure there will be a lot of crazy sex and crazy arguments and crazy laughs. So thank god! Good ride.
TVLINE | What is Emily Andras’ marching orders when she’s hosting a season-end wedding? “Above all, this wedding has to be …”?
It has to do credit to all of the characters – and by that I mean, it has to try to find a moment for every special pairing on the show, not just WayHaught. I think it’s important to take due account of how far Waverly and Doc have come. she never gave up on him, she always saw him as a better man – and now he’s going to be the best man! Nedley (Greg Lawson) and Nicole’s (Kat Barrell) relationship, this paternal / daughter bond is so special that it was very important to honor it.
And at the end of the day, I still think the show’s real love affair is the Earp sisters, so I ended up making sure this was appreciated. I really love the parallel with the pilot where Wynonna came into town against her will and was so hungry to leave but was forced to stay. And now you have Waverly sure enough about how their relationship turned out to know that Wynonna deserves to go again – because she will be back.
Most of all, it was about giving each character a moment of happiness. Even Jeremy (Varun Saranga) becomes deputy head of Black Badge and might find a new date…. It was about giving everyone a moment of potential joy after going through so much after four seasons.
TVLINE | Discuss the decision to have empty guest chairs laid out with the names of those who are no longer with us or who did not make it to the wedding.
It was such a happy coincidence. We were on the set, it was in the middle of the pandemic and we knew we would have a limited number of people for the wedding. But then we put out chairs so you could understand where the aisle was and they looked really empty. My incredible director, Paolo Barzman, who also made the pilot, and my art director, Trevor Smith, came up with this idea. I’d kind of joked about it, “Wouldn’t it be cool if you had the ghosts of the characters in the past?” At the moment they were saying, “What if we put names on the chairs?” and it was just one of those goosebumps moments like, “This is brilliant.” Then we have people who write these cards down, toss them out, and it’s one of my favorite things to be honest. Whenever I see this doll chair I can’t help but feel things.
TVLINE | But Mercedes (Dani Kind) is still with us, to be clear. She’s just out there like she’s her best vampire self.
She’s an incredible vampire, yes. I still have that fork if you can help me sell this!
TVLINE | If something caught me a little unprepared, we got a song from Rachel (played by Martina Ortiz-Luis).
The thing about Martina is that she is a phenomenal singer. She’s the anthem singer for the Toronto Maple Leafs – so she’s quite a star here! – and she was then on Pilipinas Got Talent…. It seemed like a waste not to let someone with such an extraordinary voice perform! And what better song could be put over the necessary wedding montage than a WayHaught classic (Fleurie’s “Wildwood”), the song that was first played when WayHaught kissed. It’s a bit of an Easter egg for those hardcore WayHaughters!
TVLINE | I don’t think anyone would ever have felt like a detour via “Dark Angel Waverly” was missing if they hadn’t spent time on it in the previous episode. Why was it important for you to go there in one of the last hours?
The truth is, we honestly made up for the specter of whether or not we would have a fifth season. When we started breaking season 4 two years ago, we watched the run of roughly 24 episodes [when you get half that] They say, “What are we going to keep and what are we going to throw overboard? What can we live without learning about it? “I would argue that this idea that Waverly has a darkness in it had to be highlighted after four seasons. I totally agree that in a perfect world I could have done eight episodes of Dark Angel Waverly to explore and see how it happens. But if we ever get more history, I don’t know if Waverly is in complete control of that part of himself. I don’t think it’s “gone”. If Nicole puts mayo on her sandwich instead of mustard, who knows what will sprout out of it?
TVLINE | I mean, if only to see what other outfits Dark Waverly has.
As long as she keeps her thigh holster, she’s ready to go.
TVLINE | Looking back on these last few episodes, what are you most proud of?
I am so proud of this cast. It’s so boring, but god, just to see them grow and prosper and shine … play comedy and emotions, see their commitment to the show and the feelings …. It was just a great pleasure to see how such an amazing group of people got their money’s worth. They really are so wonderful, even off-screen.
I’m also pretty happy – these days and despite all the struggles the show has been through – that if this is the end, I think this is a pretty nice finale, pretty good topper on the cake. I have a feeling the fans will feel like they have gone on a journey and they left the characters in an interesting, good place. And look, that’s really rare on TV to end your story the way you want it to. How can I be anything but grateful at the end of the day?
TVLINE | When I tweeted the other day, I wanted to call it a “very nice finale” but I was afraid you’d think I was saying it was just “good”. But it was a very nice finale!
No you have to keep me hungry! You can challenge me, Matt. Look, I just didn’t mean to risk … I’m the queen of 75 cliffhangers, but I feel like the fans have worked so hard for us for so many years that it was more important that they shut down just in case were. But there’s always another demon, there’s always another thing that triggers Dark Angel Waverly. There are more and more stories out there, but at least you have these no matter what.
TVLINE | And if a network or a streamer rides to the rescue, is there anything that will bring Wynonna and Doc back to purgatory? Or could season 5 be without the two?
Look, the show is called Wynonna Earp, so you need Wynonna Earp. She’s still the champ, she still has the magic weapon and the best hair on the show – sorry everyone else!
There are some unresolved issues. We still have Eva, who we kicked out of the garden very early in the season and who can somehow change. She could take on the look of one of our characters! That would surely throw a wrench into the works in purgatory. There are a million different reasons to bring Wynonna back to help out her sister.
TVLINE | And finally, was there something you had to cut for or just couldn’t fit in, or a recurring cast that you couldn’t fit into?
Oh tons. But look, you hit the nail on the head sooner. I’m always striving to get better, and some things in the end felt a little rushed with Dark Angel Waverly. I think if it hadn’t been a pandemic there would have been more people at this wedding. I would have liked to have seen four more episodes to round off the curve there. But look, this is Wynonna Earp, man – totally imperfect! So that’s what we did and what a ride it was. The ride of my life for me.
