A disturbing new study was published by the CDC which found that nearly 70% of black transgender women (those who have switched from male to female) currently have HIV, MTO News has learned.
The Center for Disease Control conducted a comprehensive study in major US cities and found that HIV rates among transgender women are unacceptably high. The CDC calls the study “one of the most comprehensive surveys of trans women in the US”.
The study found that two-thirds of black trans women and more than a third of Hispanic trans women surveyed in seven major cities had HIV.
Hopefully, these troubling statistics will lead to further government action – to protect the health of transgender people in the United States.

According to interviews conducted in 2019 through early 2020 with 1,608 trans women in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle, 42% of those with a valid HIV test had the disease.
Here is more disruptive data:
63% of the participants lived on or under federal poverty and 17% had no health insurance.
In the 12 months prior to the interviews, 42% of the participants were homeless and 17% were incarcerated.
34% of the participants stated that they had done sex work. Trans women are often over-represented in sex work – which can increase the risk of HIV transmission – due to a lack of job opportunities and discrimination.
54% of the trans women surveyed were verbally abused or harassed because of their gender identity or presentation. 15% stated that they were physically forced or verbally threatened to have unwanted sexual contact.
