Disney and Lucasfilms The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, launching the live-action universe of Star Wars Television. The show, created by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, proved to be a huge hit for Disney and as expected a second season was ordered. The first two seasons of The Mandalorian premiered a year apart, but it looks like fans will have to wait a little longer for season 3. In one episode of Variety’s acclaimed Actors on Actors series, Pedro Pascal sat down with fellow Star Wars colleague Ewan McGregor. Pedro Pascal announced in the conversation that he has not yet started filming the third season of The Mandalorian. And new episodes won’t come until 2022.
When McGregor asks Pedro if he shot the third season of Mandalorian, Pascal replies, “We haven’t shot a third season that confidentially, so let me tell you what’s going on anyway”. From the conversation it emerges that Pascal incorrectly disclosed the information, but he refrains from saying anything more and the two stars laugh together.
In the second season of Mandalorian, many iconic characters such as Boba Fett and Luke Skywalker returned. Some fan favorites from the Clone Wars like Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan also made their live action debuts on the show. Due to the very positive reactions from fans and critics to the show, Disney and Lucasfilm are expanding the franchise and several shows have given the green light. But after Gina Carano was fired due to transphobic and anti-Semitic tweets, the spin-off Rangers of The New Republic was canceled.
It is currently uncertain whether her popular character Cara Dune will be re-cast or ignored in future seasons. Pascal and Jon Favreau also came under fire for supporting them. Ewan McGregor is currently filming Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show will mark his return to Star Wars since Revenge of The Sith. Obi-Wan Kenobi will also present Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader. A show based on Ahsoka Tano is also in development.
The most likely reason The Mandalorian season three is delayed is because series creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are busy with The Book Of Boba Fett starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, due out this December. Pedro Pascal is also busy adapting the HBO video game The Last of Us. Favreau had previously said that Season 3 would be coming out “pretty soon” after The Book of Boba Fett. If all goes well, we can expect Din Djarin and the adorable Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) to be back in early 2022.
The Mandalorian plays Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Temuera Morrison, Katee Sackhoff, Ming-Na Wen, Bill Burr, Timothy Olyphant and Carl Weathers and Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. The Mandalorian can be streamed on Disney +. Make sure to stop by The book by Boba Fett debut in December.
