A new trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon was recently released, giving us a new look at the upcoming Disney Animation Studios movie, which is directly inspired by Southeast Asian folklore. In a recent interview, the movie's writers, Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim, spoke about the importance of the character of Raya to Southeast Asian fans. For Nguyen, the film presents a new kind of female Disney lead who is less of a "princess" and more of a "superhero".
"For me, this is the big dream. I know a lot of people are very excited that Raya is Disney's first Southeast Asian princess. But for me, it's a big deal that she's my kids' new favorite superhero. It's something I do Couldn't see growing up, someone who really represents me, our voice, our culture, and having that for my children is a blessing that will go well beyond my time here on earth, so it's an amazing moment, part of it to be. "
Over the past decade, Disney has steadily moved away from its earlier portrayals of princesses as the helpless victims men need to save them. Modern Disney princesses like Elsa and Merida are usually the ones to save up, and it seems like Raya is continuing this new tradition. For Lim, Raya and the last dragon is a way to celebrate your Southeast Asian heritage.
"When I grew up in Southeast Asia, we are very proud of our culture and our history. But you never really see it on a Hollywood screen. I had a lot of action heroes on the screen, but it was like Hong Kong Action Kung Fu. And now the idea is to be part of a Disney movie that can really celebrate everything that is beautiful about our culture and how strong our women are. And that Raya is not just an ass fighter. She has so much I have a feeling that it's so much the spirit of many women I grew up with. That's why I'm so happy that the world is seeing it too. "
