After a trio of Oscar nominations for 1917, Sam Mendes found his follow up trying to write and direct Realm of light, a historical love story starring fellow Oscar winners Olivia Colman.
The project is hosted by Searchlight Pictures, where Colman won her Oscar for The favourite. It will be her first time working with Mendes, who also wrote the script. Although the details of the plot are not yet known, the setting for the romantic drama is a beautiful old movie theater on the south coast of England in the 1980s.
Empire of Light unites Mendes with a talented cameraman Roger Deakinswho won an Oscar for his work in 1917. Mendes and Pippa Harris will produce through their Neal Street Productions and Searchlight executives Matthew Greenfield, David Greenbaum and based in the UK Katie Goodson-Thomas will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
“I’ve long been an admirer of Searchlight and the dynamic way they have produced and released some of my favorite theatrical releases over the years,” Mendes said in a statement. “This project is very close to my heart and I couldn’t be more pleased that it has found its ideal home.”

One of his classy credits is also Jarhead, Revolution Street, We go away and my personal favorite, Way to doomwho Mendes worked with for the first time Daniel Craig. Empire of Light is becoming an instant Oscar contender, but regardless of whether it is an award-eligible or not, I just look forward to seeing Mendes’ love letter to the cinemas that certainly meant more to the people of the world . 80s than now, unfortunately. Hopefully the theater exhibition industry has fully recovered by the time Empire of Light is ready to shine.
