Olivia Colman stars in Sam Mendes’ next film, Empire of Light

The setting includes a beautiful old movie theater on the south coast of England in the 1980s.


After a trio of Oscar nominations for 1917, Sam Mendes found his follow up trying to write and direct Realm of light, a historical love story starring fellow Oscar winners Olivia Colman.

The project is hosted by Searchlight Pictures, where Colman won her Oscar for The favourite. It will be her first time working with Mendes, who also wrote the script. Although the details of the plot are not yet known, the setting for the romantic drama is a beautiful old movie theater on the south coast of England in the 1980s.

Empire of Light unites Mendes with a talented cameraman Roger Deakinswho won an Oscar for his work in 1917. Mendes and Pippa Harris will produce through their Neal Street Productions and Searchlight executives Matthew Greenfield, David Greenbaum and based in the UK Katie Goodson-Thomas will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

“I’ve long been an admirer of Searchlight and the dynamic way they have produced and released some of my favorite theatrical releases over the years,” Mendes said in a statement. “This project is very close to my heart and I couldn’t be more pleased that it has found its ideal home.”
