West will be involved in the documentary but creatively take a “back seat” while shifting to his directors.
A Kanye West The documentary was snatched by Netflix, which reportedly spent $ 30 million on the deal Billboard. The project will be drawn from 21 years of home videos and never-before-seen footage of the rapper filmed by Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, also known as Coodie & Chike. The duo are the director of the unnamed documentary and it is the third time they have staged a project aimed at the West. Coodie and Chike also made music videos for West’s singles “Through the Wire” and version three of “Jesus Walks”.
TIME Studios is producing the film together with Coodie & Chike’s own production company Creative Control. Billboard also reports that West is pushing the creative aspects of the documentary into the background as his loyal friends take the lead. Coodie & Chike previously worked with Netflix on A Kid From Coney Island in 2019, and from 2012 also made the popular and highly acclaimed ESPN 30-for-30 film Benji.
The unnamed film has followed West’s life since 2000, four years before its first studio album, The College Dropout, hit shelves. The documentary will also cover monumental moments in the rapper’s life, including the death of his mother Donda West, in addition to his controversial and highly regarded run in the 2020 presidential election. A Western documentary without it would be hard to imagine Kim Kardashian, but at the moment it is not known if she will appear in the film at all. The couple are in the middle of a divorce but have been in each other’s lives for more than a decade.
Also suspected of starring in the documentary is West’s arrival in the fashion industry under his Yeezy label, which began in 2015. The designer’s entrepreneurship and ability to sell every shoe he puts on the shelf put him on Forbes’ billionaires list for the country for the first time this year, according to Deadline.
West has not yet commented on his documentary at the time and has been silent on his once booming Twitter account since election day last year. The unnamed documentary will hit Netflix later this year.
