Bruce Campbell shares the hilarious reason Ash was so jacked up on the Army of Darkness poster

Following the success of Sam Raimi’s first two Evil Dead films, the filmmaker has teamed up with longtime creative partner Bruce Campbell to direct the third installment in the series. Army of darkness. The film saw Campbell as the unlikely horror movie action hero Ash Williams, who waged a war against the undead in the Middle Ages. The film’s poster showed an unnaturally jacked up and tattered ash, which raised its arms in triumph. Recently, Campbell tweeted about the poster, admitting that the muscles were the brainchild of the movie’s producer.

Yes, producer Dino De Laurentiis had everything under control. It is the foreign poster. He knew Schwarzenegger was being sold overseas, so he made me look like Arnold. It’s very stupid. https://t.co/uK3cq8DdBY

By the time Army of Darkness was released, Arnold Schwarzenegger had already established himself as the world’s greatest action star, and his bulging biceps had become a legend that graced wall posters and movie signs alike in the gym around the world.

It is therefore understandable that the producers of Army of Darkness would like to make their hero look more like Schwarzenegger in order to appeal to foreign markets. Even if Ash is as dissimilar as possible to an “Arnold” movie character.

While Schwarzenegger is known for playing stoic but kind-hearted macho men who want to save the day, Ash Williams has always been shaped by his desire to stay as far away from the action as possible and instead use his free time to booze and drink women embed righteous crusades against his enemies.

It was this unusual approach to a leading storyline that made Bruce Campbell as unforgettable as Ash. The audience understood the character’s desperation in the face of an army of dead and cheered him when he finally decided to stop running, to stand and fight, to use a chainsaw instead of a hand and a shotgun single-handedly with a style and one hand to wield boasting that would make Schwarzenegger’s Terminator green with jealousy.

While original Evil Dead fans always consider Campbell’s Ash to be the face of the iconic horror franchise, for the past few years the actor has insisted on retiring his character. A new Evil Dead movie is planned with a completely new cast and director, with Campbell and Raimi helping as producers of the project.

Still, fans are hoping that one day the show will see a real return from Campbell and Raimi, who kicked it off. It’s a feeling Raimi also shares when he revealed last year that he would like to make another Evil Dead movie with the return of Ash Williams.

“Bruce, Rob [Tapert] and I’m working with a young filmmaker who’s writing a new Evil Dead story that he’s going to direct. As for me … I would love to do a new Evil Dead movie … but I would really love to do it with Bruce. And he says he withdrew the character. I hope not.”
