Colin O'Donoghue made his debut as Captain Hook of Once Upon A Time eight years ago this week, long before he was "room-suit" as Gordo Cooper of The Right Stuff. But before he did, he almost got a helping "hand" from Dustin Hoffman& # 39; S own, large-format version of Peter Pan's pirate enemy.
O’Donoghue reminded TVLine of his Once-iversay in a recent interview: “One of the things that stood out from the start was that I actually tried to use the hook from Dustin Hoffman's film (with Robin Williams). We considered using this hook but the one he actually wore is massive because his costume and everything was so extravagant and so big. "
The ABC series, which picks up the iconic Disney villain, was more aimed at "black leather and an open blouse," the Irish actor recalled with a laugh.
Once upon a time there was a hook that also had a more dramatic eye. "I hadn't realized that there was going to be so much ('Guyliner') and that there was going to be," said O & # 39; Donoghue. “I think people are very disappointed when they meet me or see pictures of me without eyeliner. In (Disney + & # 39; s) The Right Stuff, I don't have a beard and I have a haircut like a 12 year old boy so I guess I look quite different! "
OUAT promoted O'Donoghue from repeat to regular series even before Hook first immersed himself in Miss Emma Swan's life. And from that moment on, they formed one of the core couples of the series – that is, once the steely heroine (and viewers) of the series warmed to the pirate's mischievous ways.
"I had a very clear idea of how I was going to play him, and (showrunner) Eddie (Kitsis) and Adam (Horowitz) were on the same page from the start," said O & # 39; Donoghue. “I just made a nod to everything I could – that was an integral part of who he was – but I knew I could do it in a cheeky way so that you could somehow get away with it.
“I wanted him to be someone guys and girls want to be with but I knew he was bad news,” he added. "So I wanted him to be early – very charming bad boy."
O & # 39; Donoghue was on OUAT from season 2 through the end, exchanging vows with Emma in the musical / wedding episode of season 6 and then staying for the "requel" of season 7 (although lead actress Jennifer Morrison ran her run as a series regularly ). For this farewell season, O'Donoghue got to play the Wish Realm's Captain Hook (fleeting belly and everything) and the amnesiac detective version of the Seattle Police Department.
All in all, Hook was "such a great character – and a big part of my life for a long time," said his actor. (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)
